At Surfrider Puerto Rico, we believe that environmental conservation is not just about protecting our oceans, waves, and beaches—it is an act of humanity. The essence of our work lies in empathy, in understanding that nature and people are deeply connected. Conserving the environment ultimately means caring for others and ensuring that everyone can enjoy safe, accessible, and vibrant spaces.
On February 22, our Jardín de Olas - Center for Research and Ecological Restoration in Isabela, became the setting for a special event that reminded us of the power of human connection. In collaboration with Autism & Music, we hosted a fun-filled day designed especially for children with autism and their families. Surrounded by music, games, and moments of togetherness, we created a space where inclusion, joy, and respect for diversity took center stage.
More than 30 families joined this beautiful experience, enjoying a magical afternoon that ended with a breathtaking sunset at the basketball court—an area we restored along with our facilities to strengthen the sense of community. And that is precisely the vision behind Jardín de Olas: transforming an abandoned space into a thriving hub for life, connection, and collective growth.
For Surfrider Puerto Rico, this event was much more than a recreational activity; it was a reaffirmation of our commitment to creating safe and welcoming spaces for all. We want every person, regardless of their abilities or circumstances, to feel that they have a place in nature, that the ocean belongs to everyone, and that communities are built with empathy, respect, and love.
We are deeply grateful to everyone who has been part of this journey—from the volunteers who have poured their time and effort into this project to the families who have joined us along the way. What was once a forgotten place is now a refuge of hope and connection. We will continue working to ensure that Jardín de Olas remains a beacon of light for our community in Bajura and for all who visit from across Puerto Rico and beyond.
